Situated just east of one of the most popular treks of Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem. Few trekkers make their way to the Mardi Himal Base Camp spectacularly situated at the base of Mardi Himal and the impressive Machapuchhre.

The trail goes along small winding paths, through magical rhododendron forests until you climb out of the forest at an elevation around 3,300 m. The landscape changes quite abruptly into a rugged high mountain landscape, with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

From High Camp (3580 m) you can climb up to Mardi Himal Base Camp in about 3-4 hours, which offers spectacular close up views of the entire Annapurna Range.

Altitude and mountain sickness is not really a problem on the Mardi Himal Base Camp trek as you won’t be at a high altitude for very long. Many people from all walks of life, ages and fitness levels can do the Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek. Now of days simple teahouse / trekkers are lodges are available along the way, so there should be any major issues for accommodation.

Itinerary In Detail

  • Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,592 ft.)

    Upon arrival in Katmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, meet, assist and transfer to hotel. After welcome refreshments and room check in the hotel, there will be a short briefing and orientation about the trek.

  • Day 02: Trekking preparation and sightseeing day in Kathmandu.

    Am: After breakfast, proceed for a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu City.  It includes visit to the Bouddhanath Stupa, the biggest stupa in Nepal. This is also called by many as Khasti Chitya, is one of the oldest stupas in the country. The stupa, a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site, is included in World Heritage Cultural site list by UNESCO. With diameter of about 100m and 40m height, Buddhanath holds its place among the largest Stupa in the world!

    Later proceed to Pashupatinath Temple, with its astonishing architectural beauty, stands as a symbol of faith, religion, culture and tradition. Regarded as the most sacred temple of Hindu Lord Shiva in the world, Pashupatinath Temple’s existence dates back to 400 A.D. The richly-ornamented pagoda houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple that is also known as ‘The Temple of Living Beings’, which is listed UNESCO world heritage Site. Later transfer back to hotel for some rest and refreshment.

    After visiting Pashupatinath Temple proceed for sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square. Listed as one of the eight Cultural World Heritage site by UNESCO, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th and 18th centuries. The square is known to be the social, religious and urban focal point of the Capital City. The Palace Complex was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and was the site of important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch. We can also visit Temple of Living Goddess “Kumari”, and the Kasthamandap Temple, which is believed to be constructed from the wood of a single tree from which Kathmandu derives its name

  • Day 03: Fly to Pokhara, drive to Kande and trek to Pitam Deurali (2,100 m) via Australian Camp

    After early breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport to board the 25 min flight to Pokhara. Upon arrival in Pokahra meet waiting vehicle and drive to Kande, where you will meet by your trekking crew.

    After short preparation start gentle climb to Austrian Camp for lunch. After lunch continue on the trail doing down a fairly gentle slope cut into steps in the middle of the forest and then a short climb brings us to the settlement of Pothana (1890 m) after an hour, with magnificent views of the western Himalayas. The path from here slowly ascends until it reaches the locality of Pritam Deurali (2,100 m) located at the crest of the ridge.

  • Day 04: Trek to Forest Camp (2,550 m) – 6 hrs.

    After breakfast, leave main trail towards left which leads to Annapurna Base Camp and head towards Forest Camp. The trail very quit mostly through dense mix forest of Oak, Maple, Junipher, Pine, hemlock and Rhododendron. We stop in a small tea shop for a lunch. After lunch continue towards Forest Camp.

  • Day 05: Trek to Badal Danda (2,990 m) – 5hrs.

    After breakfast, start trek to Badal Danda. We start mostly through the forest, however further we ascend vegetation start to change with more rhododendron and the trees are covered with moss, lichen and tree ferns. We reach to Lowe Camp in around 3/4 hours for lunch. After lunch we continue trek to Badal Danda for another 2 hours.

  • Day 06: Trek to High Camp (3,580 m / 11,742 ft.) – 3/4hrs.

    We trek uphill alongside a ridge towards Mardi Himal and Macchhapuchhre. The tree lines start getting thinner and the area mostly consists of shrubs with isolated rhododendron bushes along the trail. If lucky, we might even come across the Daphne pheasant (national bird of Nepal) on our way to high camp. We ascend up to the high camp, which the final destination of the day. From here the mountain views are stunning.

  • Day 07: Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m/14,770 ft.) – 3 hrs. & backtrack to Low camp – 2 Hours

    Early morning wake up and trek to the upper viewpoint we ascend and descend, and sometimes on a steep and narrow trail. Our trail passes through pastures and we hike along a narrow ridge before reaching the Upper Viewpoint. The view of the Himalayan vista from here is astonishing. We see Mardi Himal (5587m), Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna south (7219m), Hiunchuli (6441m), Baraha Shikhar (Mt. Fang) (7647m), Ten Peak (5695m), Singhachuli (6501m), Machapuchhre (6993m) and others. We trek back to the high camp for breakfast and later trek descend back to Low camp for an overnight stay.

  • Day 08: Trek to Sidhing Village (1,700 m/5,576ft.) & Drive to Pokhara – 2 Hours

    After breakfast, trek down to Sidhing village about 3 hours and meet the waiting vehicle and drive to Pokhara and check in to the hotel.

    Pm: Free afternoon for shopping or rest.

    Overnight at Lakeside Hotel.

  • Day 09: Free day in Pokhara.

    Spend a relaxing day in Pokhara or you may go for a sightseeing tour of this beautiful valley on your won.

  • Day 10: Fly Back to Kathmandu (25 min)

    After breakfast, transfers to Pokhara Domestic Airport (15 minutes) and take a scenic 25 minutes flight back to Kathmandu. Rest of the day is free on your own.

    Overnight at hotel. 

  • Day 11: Final departure.

    Free until final departure transfer to Kathmandu International Airport.
