INTRODUCTION
Makalu Barun National Park offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas. The rewards of trekking here are fantastic, but hard won – this is remote wilderness trekking for the experienced. The trail to Makalu Base Camp takes you deep into the high Himalayas with the giant of Makalu, The Great Black, looming above you and Everest, Lhotse and Baruntse in view. The verdant Arun and Barun river valleys lead to Makalu Base Camp.

Itinerary In Detail

  • 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,592 ft.)Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,592 ft.)

    Upon arrival in Katmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, meet, assist and transfer to hotel. After welcome refreshments and room check in the hotel, there will be a short briefing and orientation about the trip. Rest of the day is free for leisure.
    Overnight at hotel.

  • 2: Trek preparation and sightseeing day in Kathmandu.

    Am: After breakfast, proceed for a sightseeing tour of Kathmandu City. It includes visit to the Bouddhanath
    Stupa, the biggest stupa in Nepal. This is also called by many as Khasti Chitya, is one of the oldest stupas in the
    country. The stupa, a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site, is included in World Heritage Cultural site list by
    UNESCO. With diameter of about 100m and 40m height, Buddhanath holds its place among the largest Stupa in
    the world!
    Later proceed to Pashupatinath Temple, with its astonishing architectural beauty, stands as a symbol of faith, religion, culture and tradition. Regarded as the most sacred temple of Hindu Lord Shiva in the world, Pashupatinath Temple  existence dates back to 400 A.D. The richly-ornamented pagoda houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple that is also known as The Temple of Living Beings  which is listed UNESCO world heritage Site. Later transfer back to hotel for some rest and refreshment.

    After visiting Pashupatinath Temple proceed for sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square. Listed as one of the eight Cultural World Heritage site by UNESCO, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th and 18th centuries. The square is known to be the social, religious and urban focal point of the Capital City. The Palace Complex was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century and was the site of important ceremonies, such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch. We can also visit Temple of Living Goddess “Kumari”, and the Kasthamandap Temple, which is believed to be constructed from the wood of a single tree from which Kathmandu derives its name
    Pm: Free for trek preparation – briefing and orientation etc.
    Eve: Traditional Welcome dinner followed by Nepali Cultural program.
    Overnight at hotel.

  • 3: Fly to Tumlingtar (1 hr.) & drive to Num Village (1,560 m / 5,120 ft.)

    After breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu’s domestic airport to board the 45 min. flight to Tumlingtar. Upon arrival meet by waiting jeep’s and start drive to Num, which will take 4~5 hrs. via Khadbari.
    Dinner and overnight at Camp.

  • 4: Trek to Seduwa (1,510 m / 5,952 ft.) – 5~6 hrs.

    From Num village, we descend on a steep trail through terraced fields and jungle to the Arun River at an altitude of 650 m / 2,132 ft. We cross the suspension bridge over the fast – flowing Arun River and start steep climb up to the village of Seduwa. Here is the check post for Makalu – Barun National Park.

  • 5: Trek to Tashigaun (2,070 m / 6,790 ft.) – 5~6 hrs.

    After breakfast follow the trial out of the valley through rhododendron and bamboo. We then start traversing through terraced rice fields to Manigaun. From here the trail continuous through forest and farmland to Tashigaon village, which has a camping ground. There is a radio service station and a helipad at the Hydrology research station in case of an emergency.

  • 6: Trek to Khongma (3,560 m / 11,678 ft.) – 6~7 hrs.

    Climb over the ridge to ascend through forests to reach the stream, from there onto a ridge where there is a small herders hut. The trail levels out there, then climbs to a shepherd’s hut called “Chipla” atop another ridge at 2,520 meters. Cross two small streams and an overhanging rock that forms a cave…
    Overnight at Camp.

  • 7: Rest day for acclimatization.

    Spend a rest day in Kongma for acclimatization.

  • 8: Trek to Mumbuk (3,550 m / 11,644 ft.) via Tutu la (4,050 m / 13,284 ft.) & Keke la (4,150 m / 13616 ft.)

    Climb to the top of the ridge at 3,850m / 12,628 ft. where there is a stone Chorten adorned with prayer flags. After a few false summits the trail climbs over a side ridge. This is Ghungru La (also known as Tutu La at 4050 m), the first of the three passes you must cross to reach the Barun Khola. Descend to a small lake at 3990 meters, then climb steeply up a shallow rocky gully to the Shipton La (4216 m). Descend from the pass to the two lakes at 4,030 m/30,220 ft. Ascend through the large boulders of the Keke La (4150 m). About 100 meters below the pass is a meadow called Dobato. Camping is not allowed here. The route traverses to Mumbuk, a campsite at 3,550 m / 11,644 ft.

  • 9: Trek to Ngehe Kharka (3,750 m / 12,300 ft) – 5 hrs.

    From Mumbuk descend down 300 meters through a steep rocky gully that turns into a stream during the monsoons. At the bottom the trail turns westwards along the bottom of the Barun Valley. Pass a small cave under an overhanging rock at 3250 meters. The climb starts gently out from Yangle Kharka to Ngehe Kharka – a large open grassy plain at an elevation of 3750 meters on the opposite side of the Barun Khola.

  • 10: Trek to Shersong (4,650 m / 15,252 ft) – 5 hrs.

    Beyond Ngehe Kharka follow the Barun Valley past Riphuk Kharka (3,930m). Climb alongside a waterfall, then onto a swampy meadow and cross a stream. The trail climbs over a ridge and ascends alongside a moraine formed by the Barun Glacier. Merek is at 4570 meters and from here it is about 1 ½ hour to Shersong.

  • 11: Acclimatization day in Shersong (4,650 m / 15,252 ft) – 5 hrs.

    Explore around Shersong and visit the glacier lake near peak 6.

  • 12: Trek to Makalu Base Camp (5,000 m / 16,400 ft) – 5 hrs.

    From Shersong stay to the right on the east side of the valley. It is a gradual climb to a minor pass about 100 meters above Makalu Base Camp.

  • 13: Back track to Ngehe Kharka

    Am: Explore around Makalu Base Camp, later after breakfast start backtrack to Ngehe Kharka.

  • 14: Backtrack to Mumbuk – 7~8 hrs.

    We follow same track back to Mumbuk.
    Dinner and overnight at Camp.

  • 15: Backtrack to Danda Kharka (2,640 m / 11,644 ft.) via Keke la (4,150 m / 8,460 ft.) & Tutu la (4,050 m / 13,284 ft.) & – 7~8 hrs.

    After breakfast trek to Dobato, from here climb to Keke La (4,150m / 13,612 ft.). We descend to Kalo PokhariLake followed by another climb  Shipton La at an altitude of 4,216m / 13,828 ft.). On a clear day, there are superb views to the North of Makalu and Chamlang. We descend on a switchback trail through rhododendrons to Khongma. From there we descend steeply for a further two hours through rhododendron forest until we reach the lodge at Danda Kharka where we camp for the night.

  • 16: Backtrack to Seduwa (1,510 m / 5,952 ft.) – 5~6 hrs.

    We descend on the same trail from Khongma down to Tashigaon and then down to Seduwa village.
    Dinner and overnight at Camp.

  • 18: Fly to Kathmandu and spend a relaxing day.

    After breakfast transfer to nearby airport to board the flight to Kathmandu. Upon arrival transfer to hotel. Rest
    of the day is for leisure.
    Overnight at hotel.

  • 19: Contingency day in Kathmandu.

    Spend an extra day in Kathmandu for contingency in case of delay on trek due to weather or flight cancellation or
    any other circumstances.
    Overnight at hotel.

  • 20: Final departure from Kathmandu.

    Free until final departure transfer to Kathmandu’s International Airport.
