Itinerary In Detail

  • Day 01: Arrival in Srinagar (1585m/5200 ft.)

Reporting time at Srinagar airport is 14.00 hrs. We drive to Nagin lake. Check into houseboats on the famous and cleaner Nagin Lake. Since the accommodation in houseboats is limited the group may check into different houseboats. Dinner and overnight stay at houseboat in Srinagar (Nagin Lake).

  • Day 02: Srinagar – Kargil (2704m/8872 ft.; 196 km; 7-8 hrs)

Passing Sonmarg, today we cross the famed Zojila pass; the movement on this is restricted by the movement of the military convoys. We climb over Zojila Pass and then pass the Dras War memorial. It was built to commemorate the victory of “Operation Vijay” in July 1999 and in honour of the soldiers who lost their lives during the Kargil war. The Museum displays photos of Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the Indo-Pak wars; miniatures of the mountain-scape of Jammu & Kashmir; official Army emblems; archives of war documents and recordings; and captured Pakistani war gear and equipment. Kargil is an outpost which gained prominence in the recent war there. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Kargil.

  • Day 03: Kargil – Rangdum (3657m/11,999 ft.; 130 km; 6-7 hrs)

We leave for Rangdum after breakfast. Rangdum is an elliptically expanded plateau surrounded by colourful hills on the one side and glacier encrusted Rocky Mountains on the other. Situated approximately 130 km South-east of Kargil, it falls midway between Kargil and Padum. On arrival, we visit the Rangdum Gompa which was founded in the 18th century. It serves as the residence of approximately 40 monks. One of the major attractions of the monastery is its small museum. Dinner and overnight stay at a guesthouse in Rangdum.

  • Day 04: Rangdum – Padum (3579m/11,743 ft.; 104 km; 5 hrs)

We leave for Padum after breakfast. Padum the capital of the ancient kingdom of Zanskar is the present day administrative headquarters of the region. It is the most populous settlement of Zanskar, in an otherwise very scarcely inhabited valley. The nearest monument in Padum is a set of ancient rock carving on a huge boulder near the riverbank, just below the old township. These dates from the 8th century and provide epigraphic evidence that the region was under the influence of North Indian Buddhism since ancient times. Dinner and overnight stay at a guesthouse in Padum.

  • Day 05: Padum – Excursion to Karsha Gompa (4320m/14,174 ft.), Zangla Gompa (3640m/11,943 ft.), Pishu, Hanumil

The Karsha Monastery of Ladakh is situated in the Karsha village of the Zanskar region. The monastery, also known by the name “Karsha Chamspaling’, was founded by Phagspa Shesrab, under the Gelugpa Order or the Yellow Hat Order. The monastery consists of a number of shrines and boasts of some of the most exquisite wall paintings, by the Lama Dzadpa Dorje. It serves as the residence of approximately 100 monks. We also visit the Zangla Gompa & Palace and proceed to see the villages of Pishu & Hanumil. Dinner and overnight stay at guesthouse/camp in Hanumil.

  • Day 06: Hanumil - Padum

Today we explore the area around Hanumil post breakfast & retrace our steps back to Padum. Dinner and overnight stay at guesthouse in Padum.

  • Day 08: Purne – Padum

We try and explore the area around Purne and return back to Padum. Dinner and overnight stay at guesthouse in Padum.

  • Day 09: Padum – Free day

Free day, we can take a stroll in the Padum market and explore this small town. Dinner and overnight stay at guesthouse in Padum.

  • Day 10: Padum – Kargil (2704m/8872 ft.; 234 km; 11-12 hrs)

Post breakfast we drive to Kargil. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Kargil.

  • Day 11: Kargil – Srinagar (196 km; 7-8 hrs)

We start from Kargil very early by 3.00 am. This is necessary in order to avoid the Military convoy movement. Dinner and overnight stay at a houseboat in Srinagar (Nagin Lake).

  • Day 12: Final Departure

Now all that remains is to get to Srinagar Domestic Airport. But because of security checks this takes time. We have to keep buffer time of a minimum 3 hrs as there are 3 security checks before you board the flight. So accordingly, we head towards the Airport to board the flight for onward journey.
